Western medical acupuncture is a safe gentle form of acupuncture therapy used to alleviate pain, muscle knots (trigger points), reduce muscle tension and aches. Medical acupuncture can be used either as a stand-alone therapy or more commonly as part of a wider osteopathic treatment.
After an initial osteopathic assessment, medical acupuncture may be discussed if it is appropriate for your pain / injury and your individual needs and preferences.
The treatment involves fine needles being inserted into the targeted muscles and left in position for a short while until a response is noted. The number of needles varies but may only be two or three.
Acupuncture stimulates the nerves in the skin and muscle tissues, causing an increase in the body’s release of natural painkillers, these chemicals help to modify and reduce pain signals. The treatment may include a few consecutive appointments depending on your condition and response to therapy.
